Challenge
The gate had stopped operating reliably and the obvious quote was a replacement. But the ornamental panel was original to the property and matched the frontage in a way no catalogue gate would.
Approach
We assessed the panel separately from the mechanism. The ironwork was structurally sound under the corrosion, so it was stripped, repaired at the failed joints and refinished. The running gear, rollers, track and operator were treated as a separate replacement decision.
Detail
Restoration only makes sense when the frame is intact. Where corrosion has reached the structural members rather than the surface, replacement is the honest recommendation, and we say so at the diagnostic rather than after the panel is off its posts.
Result
The property kept its original gate with modern running gear and a current operator beneath it, at less than the cost of fabricating a comparable ornamental replacement.
